I suppose they do "own" them in some way, but they don't have any legal rights to them, for example if someone else played Gandalf, people wouldn't react to it in the same way they have reacted to Ian McKellen's performance.

And there he is- the man himself. Very appropriate. Gandalf is my favorite character, I think.

I agree- I can hardly picture anyone else in anoy of those roles. Especially not TownAgorn... I think probably when they say "own" they mean it's illegal to put those characters in your own fictional setting because they were created by JRRT. Probably why all these fanfic sites have more disclaimers on them than actually pieces of fanfic.

I disagree (not with Esteldil - I mean with earlier). The actors can only "own" the characters from the aspect that it's difficult to imagine anyone else in the role - and that's pushing it - and not necessarily true. When I think "Ocean's Eleven", I think George Clooney, not Frank Sinatra. When I think "Starsky and Hutch", I think Owen Wilson and that other dude, not whoever played them in the seventies. When I think "Chicago", I think Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta Jones, even though there have been millions of theatre performances and remakes. When I think "Beauty and the Beast", I think the scarily big-eyed cartoon brunette, not the star of the first black and white movie to tell the story (as there doubtlessly was one). In 20 years or so, someone will make a remake of LotR, with different actors, better special effects (perhaps starring Harry Mortenson and Feanor Bloom? ) and the new viewers will accept their roles without the blink of an eye, except to wipe away a tear when Mount Doom once again explodes, more spectacularly this time, under the feet of our little Hobbits.

Ben Stiller. David Soul before and Paul Glaser. I saw that yesterday and it is really really funny and O LOVE Snoop Dogg as Huggy Bear, he is waaay too skinny though. I think the only reason we can only picture them though is that's all we know and we have never seen the originals. There were apparently people in the cinema who were 40+ who were actually crying at the end of Starsky and Hutch the new one when they did the scene of them running up the beach like int the original and when David Soul and Paul cameoed. To some it is really nostalgic. But contary I don't see Drew Barrymore, Cameron Dias and Lucy Liu as the Charlie's angels, probably as I watched the old repeats of it on UK Gold however when younger. As for ocean's eleven, I hate that film, but I do think of Clooney and Matt Damon, they are bringing out ocean's twelve this year btw Hope they don't make a remake, I can't see that happening for maybe 40 years though if it does and people won't like it as much. It would be like trying to remake star wars, it just wouldn't work. Who's Feanor Bloom?? Harry, he's ugly, no way!!!

I think the only reason we can only picture them though is that's all we know and we have never seen the originals. Exactly. All the "owning" is in the memories of individual people; and often they don't agree. E.g. I don't see Haldir as Craig Parker at all. In fact I get a nasty shock every time I see the film. When reading certain bits of RotK, I don't think Frodo looks anything like Elijah Wood. When reading TTT I don't even see Legolas as Orlando Bloom. And I completely and utterly disagree with the Decipher card representations of Glorfindel, Elladan, Elrohir, Galdor and Erestor (even though they are the "official" pictures, and even though I still don't have a solid image in my head of what they should look like). If they (unlikely) made another LotR film starring someone I imagine as Haldir, that Haldir would immediately replace Craig Parker in "ownership", even if Craig "got there first". Now that's not exactly ownership... Aw, that's sweet Did you cry? That's where we differ. In that case, would you say the old actresses still "own" the characters? Wow, that should be interesting! Do you know what it's going to be about? Nick will get excited - he loves that film Cinema technology is advancing at terrifying speeds. If 3D-films become more widespread, I'm sure the current LotR will seem as out of date as black-and-white. I've never actually seen a picture of him. Got one I could look/laugh at?

Yes, I would quite like to see a piccie of Harry too, if only to see if he's anything like his dad. Ugh. Just thought how that sounds. Veeeeggo is a father and as old as mine. Oh dear. better stop thinking along those lines before I'm sick... I agree with Comma in that actors cannot really owncharacters. for all the reasons she's given and also because, at the end of the day, the character was not devised by them. No matter how much of an original spin they bring to it, the fundamental bits of the character will always be the same and inspired by the creator. So, I think Tolkien owns the charcters. Not his darn estate or anyone else. not even PJ (or maybe especially not PJ). But Tolkien.

I agree with Comma too, the actors only own the charachter for certain people, people who read the books have a totally different opiniobn of them then other people. PJ obviously imagined Haldir that way but I didn't see him like that, Craig seem too, smug, fat lol, sorry but it is true, all elves I imagine should be very lithe, and sorry but Craig isn't. I think in the film, I liked Eomer's portrayal, Karl did a good job there, Theoden's was ok, lacking a bit. Sam's I liked, that precisely how I saw Sam, Frodo I liked but I think Frodo should have been less of a looker. Merry and Pippin...no a little too funny, they are a lot more sensible in the book, not how I saw them at all. Gandalf was perfect, just how I had seen him, SIM did a wonderful job there. But then, that is my opinion, I am sure many people disagree and that is only because of their first views of the chrachters before the films. When I read the books, I barely remembered seeing FotR the film and didn't remember much of it at all, I couldn't even remember the different people and their charachters, however on second and third etc viewings I suddely got it, but they were totally different. It is of course though, impossible to have a universal way of portraying a character that everyone agrees with. I especially agree that Haldir was wrong though. Nope I didn't cry at Starsky and Hutch, I was laughing cos Ben and Owen looked silly, but it did bring a lump to my throat when David and Paul cameoed, there was this huge cheer in the cinema as well it was nice I hate the new portrayal of Charlie's Angels, I think that Farrah Faucett will forever be an angel, not Cameron and the others. However, had I never seen an episode in my life I would think more than likely the opposite. I must say I hated the new Bosley, the black guy (no offence, the original one was white ok?) just couldn't pull it off. I don't think LotR will be out of touch for a few years yet, but in time it will look lod and we will laugh and won't be able to believe that we thought the graphics were good (except Deagol at the beginning of RotK that is crap). Ooh 3D LotR now there is an idea! Harry is on the FotR extended disc 3, that is the only time I ahve seen him and he was only about 12 on there, he was ugly enough then though, very chubby too. He is like 15 now, there are some pictures about I'll have a look. As for Ocean's 12 - www.comingsoon.net/movies/o/oceans12.phpApparently filming was taking place back in April last year and it will be out in December. It is getting like "It's a mad mad mad mad mad World" there are loads of famous people, even Catherine Zeta Jones is in it now!!!
