That was a very interesting article There was loads about Balrogs in there, but I felt none of it actually contributed to the debate of whether they had wings Oh, apart from this bit: Did Tolkien ever state this? IMO, Balrogs didn't have wings, but this is only from what I've read. As yet, I've never read anything that Tolkien wrote that suggested otherwise. But I do agree that Tolkien probably changed his mind at some point.

Well the point of the article was to show how Tolkien had portrayed them throughout, they had constantly been changed and were at first steeds, there are meant to be points where Tolkien has indirectly stated that they have wings, but I don't know where will keep my eyes peeled.
But the way I see it, this has bugged LotR fans for many years, I doubt we will ever be able to agree and come to a conclusion.

That doesn't mean we shouldn't try I for one just wanted to a) see if we could reach a conclusion, b) see what other people thought on the topic, and c) hopefully learn something from other people, and from being stimulated to do some own research. It's interesting what we've talked about so far. I personally don't think Balrogs have wings but I don't suppose we'll ever know; since Tolkien obviously changed his mind himself!

Nothing can ever come between us, Tinor! (bnlt, obviously) Some people say po-tar-tar, but that's a bit of a misunderstanding.

Precisely! You spell it "tater", like Sam, and not "tay-tar". Who can possibly blame me for reading it "tar-tar"?

Oooh yeah, colour co-ordinate it to you kitchen.
Anyway back to balrog, I don't know if she still wants to but Beccy said that she wanted to do a talk on the subject do Balrogs have wings.
I think that if they didn't they wouldn't envoke as much fear. But the fact that it says man shaped does give the impression that it was just a really big firery person. Hmmm am beginning to sway...maybe they didn't ahve wings. Hmmm...
