Yeah, I agree. We know Tolkien created the character for his children's stories, etc, so I suppose he never bothered justifying even to himself how exactly Tom fitted in with ME mythology - and simply made him one more of those mysteries that make ME so interesting Still, I reckon it's interesting to speculate. We can always create our own cannon

Hehehe construct our own cannon...yeaaaas
What was the point again, d**n I forgot...OH yeah, I agree it is fun to speculate. I like the thought of him being a Valar or indeed Eru, that is pretending I know it isn't possible. I just think it would be nice if he was just a part of the earth, a little bit of the earth that was alive...if you catch my drift. That is an odd phrase that...anyway.

I wouldn't dare to! I'll only comment that we don't know how and why Illuvatar created Tom (since of course he did). And if Tom is the Oldest and the Fatherless... Oooh, new thought. The "Oldest and Fatherless" description may be Tolkien's hint at the history of ME - the growth of the literature, as opposed to the chronological history of what happened in it. I don't know if this is the case - was Tom Bombadil one of Tolkien's earliest creations? Was Tom Bombadil in that case the "Father" to all his other story-tellings? If that is the case, then his inclusion may be as a "cameo", and a tribute, to those wonderful stories Tolkien made for his children, and TB, indeed, has no other purpose in Arda.

Hmm- yes, that could work. in which case Tolkienites have been bashing their heads on brick walls for the past however many years...
That could make sense too- after all, Tolkien did base TB on one of his kid's dolls. hehe- TB is a cameo.
