This is typical isn't it...i've started a Q & A thread, and in the space of doing that and getting round to write in this box, i've forgotten what my Question was! What is wrong with me today? ... ... ho hum...ah, yes; i was talking to 'S' earlier, and my question was...er (still honestly cannot remember)... of course: "Why does an eye want to rule the world?" Any takers?

Before answering, i take it that this thread is for random musings not questions that require facts? (cos there's a thread for that already)?

On that basis, I think it started out as a bit of fun and then just escalated out of control until he found himself massing an army and talking to some beardy bloke via the Palantir.

the other thread seemed a little too intimidating for an idiot that knows very little about LOTR. Lets just say this is for musing.

On that basis, I think it started out as a bit of fun and then just escalated out of control until he found himself massing an army and talking to some beardy bloke via the Palantir. I first read that as "he found himself massaging an army. Why does an eye want to rule the world? Well... it could take control of all the opticians, and get himself a contact lens so he could see further. Why does he want to see further? Well... so he could watch what Manwe and Varda get up to on Taniquetil, of course.

I first read that as "he found himself massaging an army. Aww- poor ickle eye is obviously *misunderstood*. All he wanted to do was accumulate an army big enough to massage and silly men and elves overeacted, brought in the big guns/ Elrond's eyebrows and blew him to smithereens.

Ummm massing isn't a word, well it is but not the right one, it's amassing...sorry
Lol I don't really know the answer, it just isn't so much the fact that he is an eye, it is the fact that he is a very evil spirit that wants to rule the world. He is an eye as if he was like, a mouth he would be a bit useless as he wouldn't be able to see anything that was going on. The eye is just a representation of his malice while he is in this disembodied state and while he is waiting to be able to return to a body.
So...that's what I see. He was a maiar, spirit thing, but he was turned evil by Melkor and now wants the same thing Melkor did, POWER...men.

I may be misinterpreting, but it struck me that in the book, the Eye of Sauron was always metaphorical. Sauron himself is a spirit. His "Eye" sees across ME, therefore the Eye is referred to above all the rest of him, which is why we hear so much about the Eye and not the Nose. In fact, neither exist.
Frodo "sees" the Eye in his visions, but that's necessary. I doubt in reality that Tolkien actually wanted an physical eyeball mounted on top of the tower.

I don't think Tolkien wanted a lot of things: hey! new list: Things Tolkien does not hold with... I'm sure somewhere in the books though, the eye is described as if it were a real eye (or am I getting it confused with the films again ) But yes, metaphorical is probably right. Although, there are of course other bits of the body e.g. hand that could have been used. Maybe Tolkien was playing word games/ could not spell and in a mad meglomaniacl moment scribbled down "Eye want to rule the world!"?

You may be thinking of the passage in FotR (I can hardly remember it) which describes the Eye as a fiery somewhat with a dark slit. But that's in Frodo's mind. And it may exist only in the way that the spirit of the Ringwraiths are perceived as dead Kings by Frodo when he has the Ring on.

That is a gooooood point, when I read the books I never imagined any sort of actual physical Sauron exxactly, but there is one point at the end of the book thinking about it when it says the eye turned towards... when Frodo puts oon the ring in the cracks of doom. I do agree he could ahve been more than an eye but I think Tolkien did want him to be mounted on Barad-Dur as that was where he watched from....hmm conundrum...I don't know, waay too tired to think.

Hey thanks everyone for all the comments. I have another question- on the Fanfiction forum it says something about all characters belonging to their copywrited owners, well.... Who *owns* say, Gandalf? Does he remain the intellectual property of the great Mr. Tolkien, or does he now belong to the LOTR people? Or is he the sole property in some arguable way of Ian Growly Shouty Maclellan, since no one else from now <probably> is going to be Gandalf? njr_pilot

The characters are owned by the Tolkien Estate (which we don't like, btw). The films were only made because the Tolkien Estate sold the rights to make a film. The actors themselves own nothing

absolutely, BUT, when you picture Gandalf, you picture Ian Maclellan. When you think of Legolas (ahem. cough) you think Orlando Bloom.
So, in some ways, these actors are/own those characters? I don't think anyone would ever make LOTR again would they? So forever more, those characters may well be those people...
