Since we are tlaking so much about soundtracks elsewhere, i thought the wonderful genius of Howard Shore should merit its own little topic:
Ok, anything you wanna talk about the music, just post here.
I'll just give a couple of my thoughts: My favourite themes are Fellowship and Rohan (although, Gondor may come close!) I think the 2nd soundtrack is my favourite so far. Gollum's song and Aniron are amazing songs.

I think that RotK is the best sountrack of all time AND HOWARD DIDNT EVEN WIN BEST MUSIC KILLLLLLLLLLLL! *coughs* I think that May it Be is great and the "when the seas and mountains fall" are great off the FotR soundtrack but I prefer Into the West above all. The themes I love are the Shire one, which makes me cry, the RotK and the Rohan theme. I also LOVE the last march of the ents theme which I think I do a brillant impression of (though Lora I'm sure doesn't agree). I love ALL of the RotK theme and I could list it but it would just end up with me listing all the tracks so there is no point, though I do also love the theme when Arwen see her child (plus when Figwit is there YAY GO FIGWIT).
On the subject of Figwit, it has occured to me that you might not know about him in the phones for you advert?? I saw it before christmas and it is soo cool, it is still on now but not as much. If you are interested I can give you advert. Lora and I even got phones for you balloons in Sheffield, ARNT WE LIKE WAY COOL? GO US!

Do you think Figwit would even be in the least bit scared (and possible scarred) if he had any idea of the sort of cult following that has been established??
Figwit is in an advert! oooh, yes! show us show us! That would make our day (as well as the sword and Sheffield videos...hehe!)
I think I'm converted. I've been listening to Into the WEst and it's really sad. Annie Lennox sings it very well- not too soppy. And just reading the words...! so poignant...*sniff sniff*
Although, and this may change later when I've listened a bit more, but the 3rd soundtrack has disappointed me a wee bit. Apart from the song and Gondorian theme, I don't really feel that much is new. And The REturn of the King seems to just descend in to a mishmash of all themes. Oh well, I shall listen to it a bit more. At the moment though, the second one is my favourtie because I am totally in love with the Rohan theme.

Yeah I agree it is a bit of a mishmash but then it has to be I suppose, it is still my firm fav though. As for the advert it's that really annoying but very catchy tune which goes - "Phones for you, for less, at phones for you, phones for you, for less at phones for. Everybody get into a big canoe, row on down to phones for you. I'm talking to my friends in the alien zoo, ming ming ming ming a ming a min ooh" - we sing it constantly, I'm surprised you haven't heard of it, we went mad when we found out Figwit was in it...he looks very nice. It is the one where they drive around in a big van, it's called the less van we'll have you know and it's sooo cool! Here is the site - www.thelessvan.co.uk/I think he would be very scared to see the extent to which we worship him... even naming people after him...

Lol it even says on the site that he became noticed as the elf Figwit in FotR and had developed a whole army of really strange admirers, it's so true!

I think he looks really nice in that, or is it just me? I think beards adda certain rugged manlyness, which is namely why I like Aragorn mmmmmm over Leggie, I don't particually like clean shaven effeminate men.

Why does every topic move so quickly onto a different one? Ahem. My favourite themes in LotR - Lothlorien, especially how it comes back in TTT as the battle theme. So strong. So tragic. So "phwoar". The RotK is still my favourite so far, though I'm enjoying all three. It seems RotK has less of the discordant Mordor stuff though, which makes it easier to put on and listen to the whole thing from start to end.

Wow- didn't notice that in TTT, was it in Helm's Deep? I know there's a really light elvy bit at the end but i assumed that was new.
I pretty much like all of the singing bits- I think Howard SHore really manages to make full advantage of the voice- high, low, powerful, soft, pained etc. I think what makes it so powerful is that the music is scored for a very human film so using human voices expresses the emotions best.
(Trying to decide whether what I've jsut said is poncy of deeeeep. Poncy. I think)

It was extremely deep!
The Lothlorien theme comes up again in (I think) "The Hornburg", but it could be "Helm's Deep". It's not Elvish at all - it's just the notes of the Lothlorien theme, to a backing of drums. Very stunning.

(just like you ) I've just had a thought- has anyone noticed a little bit at the start of Riders of Rohan which sounds SOOO much like the Charlie's Angels theme?? It cracked me up the first time I heard it. But now I just try to block all thought from my mind.

What cracks me up is the fact that Into the West sounds like Born Free (which I have mentioned before), I can just imagine Frodo running in slow mo through Valinor now in peace with Born Free playing in the background...
I had noticed that Lothlorien theme in the background, it's cos Haldir is there and he is from Lothlorien.

I really like "The King of the Golden Hall" and all of the last songs, ie "May it Be," "Gollum's Song" and "Into the West." I agree, RotK does seem to be a bit of a mish-mash of all the other themes, but I suppose that's because the film is, in a way, it's about all different races (and their themes) uniting. I loved the Rohan and Gondor themes, and I like the way they subtly change each theme as the story moves along.
Well, that's enough intellectual discussion for tonight, thankyou.

Yeah, I love that too Arrie. The change really seems to reflect how they are faring. (very deeep btw!) It's like they can make any basic theme sounds desperate/ triumphant etc. I also like the way they mould some themes together and run them on especially how the Rohan and Gondor theme sort of metamorphosis in Fields of Pelennor.
