a) Like...erm...practise shooting? or erm...weaving? Anything else so delightful shall surely send them into raptures of glee. No - making enchantments, shape-changing, conjuring random images inside the minds of not-so-superior beings. b) first, contraception does NOT prevent you having a sex drive. Unless of course their contraception happens to be "having better things to do". No, contraception only masks their sex drive by decreasing the number of offspring. The sex drive itself is not diminished... Elves just do it more discretely than Mortals... i.e. in private! Anyway, Orcs are corrupted Elves and everyone knows that corruption usually leads to some sort of sexual corruption....hehe. Besides, weren't they all male? or didn't they reproduce by asexual reproduction with Saruman breaking them all out of eggs? Actually, that leads to another question: see other thread.... Does that mean that your beloved Men are corrupted into having a massive sex drive?

No - making enchantments, shape-changing, conjuring random images inside the minds of not-so-superior beings. erm. and that means what?! It just means they can do a little magic. Not increase their sex drive! like I said, read Bagenders.... (cannot write what was going to write as FAR too rude) Yes. It does actually. You know the what I said on Tues. about the weakness of man is to be tempted? Well... Besides, remember the prophecy that the line of Aragorn's house will never die.... weelll then....

erm. and that means what?! It just means they can do a little magic. Not increase their sex drive! But the whole point of our argument was whether or not Elves had anything better to do than sex, to which the answer is "yes"; not whether, if without those better things, they would have the drive, to which the answer is "yes". I refuse to dirty my mind with such trash as Bagenders. The Fellowship living in a British soap-setting with an alcoholic Gandalf and an obsessive chef Frodo and Merry and Pippin working in Sainsburies is nothing I want to know about.

I think we may have lost sight of the original argument... May I wave a white flag?

You may indeed ;D

Arrie, you may, but i will strive on. The original thought of the argument was whether elves had a sex drive or not. If they had "better things to do", it means they don't wish to, well, mate. Therefore, they don't have a sex-drive. It simply isn't there for them to want to do anything. Sainsbury's!!!! Anyway. That kinda put me off too as they seem so much less noble Still, it's funny. read it, read it!

It simply isn't there for them to want to do anything. No. The fact that they have a sex drive is not contradicted by the fact that they have a greater drive for other things. If you have a passion for music, but a greater passion for food, does that necessarily mean that your passion for music is less than that of someone who is apathetic towards food? No, you just have a more enriched life than they do.

Passions are proportional. The very fact that the don't spend as much time concerning themselves with sex as other 'better thing' proves that the have a very diminished sex drive.

I think perhaps it's all down to a matter of opinion, which is why this debate isn't going anywhere.
Some people are of the opinion that one has to flaunt one's libido in public in order to be recognised as having one.
Other people have more sophisticated opinions ;D

I think it's a matter of opinion too.
What some people call flaunting is probably natural behaviour to those to whom it is altogether strange. I mean, if the Elves don't have a libido at all, any sort of vaguely sexual act (like kissing!) would seem to be flaunting.
Sophisticated- another word for repressed in this case??

May I just interject that Tolkien once said on Elf sex drives that they did have them in a way. They would fall madly for one and one only and their heart would be sold. After the initial consumation and necessary children they lost all thoughts of sex and became enamoured with other things such as...trees etc, elfy things. That's what he said...but I'm not saying you shouldn't have an opinion, by all means think what you like

brilliant! Hats off to you Tinor for resolving this peacefully!
But how many children counts as the "necessary children"? Does that mean after the first one, their sex drives fade? or do you have to fall in love and mate with one that has the same pre-destined no. of necessary children?
Am I making any sense anymore? I've been posting for an hour.

Happy to oblige, I don't like to see you guys argue. LOL that little guy is so funny I only just spotted him! I don't really know how many children however, I guess however many feels right for the elves, if you think about it people today have all different numbers of children, some have 1 some have 12 (re Cheaper by the Dozen but as that is a film I'm not sure that counts). I guess it's like that, it depends on the elves themselves.

Most Elves seem to have just the one, or maybe two.
Let's see. Elrond had 3.
Galadriel and Celeborn only had 1.
Arwen and Aragorn only had 1. (Do they really count? Ah well.)
Thingol and Melian had 1.
Um...
Beren and Luthien had 1.
Any others?
Feanor had 6, but he was famed throughout the whole of Elvendom for having so many, and no one else has (probably) come close.
